G&L ASAT Special Review

I’m on location at Guitarworks in Greenwood, IN reviewing the G&L ASAT Special. This is kind of the telecaster for their guitar line.

G&L is a company Leo Fender headed up in Fullerton, CA in 1980. I think it’s really cool because they’re still using some of the original tooling and dyes from the original Fender factory.

This guitar has a spalted Alder top over an Ash body. A maple neck with a Rosewood fingerboard and a 25 1/2 scale length.

I think the star of their whole guitar line up is the magnetic field pickup.

It’s a single coil, somewhere between the old school P90 pickups from Gibson and the Stratocaster/Telecaster single coil of the Fender guitar.

They have the girth and mid-range punch of the P90, with the twanginess of a Fender.

The neck pickup creates a cool bluesy / dark smokey sound.

If you roll the tone knob back, you could play some cool jazz, if this was your only backup guitar.

The middle pickup setting produces the classic Telecaster rhythm sound.

With the bridge pickup, you can get great sounding steel guitar bends.

It has the twanginess you need, but also some of that really cool mid-range.
